hi folks,
I have an interveiew tomorrow by phone, and they are a recruitment agency who store their CV's in a database on an AS 400. I have never come accross this before. Can you plese lead me towards some info so that I can at least talk about it tomorrow. Thanks in advance,
Ger.

The AS400 (the name of the operating system for the OS400, the hardware) is IBM's original answer to mid-range computers. It is a completely different kind of beast than Unix. It has libraries and members instead of filesystems and files (although it does also have files). It uses EBCIDIC instead of ASCII. And everything (it seems) begins with q: qsysopr, qsecofr (root), qgpl.

It is a great operating system for databases, and the folks who program/sys admin the system have a tendency to not be curious about other OS's.

There is an AS400 forum on Tek-Tips. Take a look there to get a better idea about the OS.

a useless tidbit: an AS/400 can run (multiple) instances of AIX, Linux and Lindows (I think, some Windows clone, prob not Win itself). OS/400 lies underneath, of course.

Yes, it can, on a very, very expensive piece of equipment.

It's a expensive machine and it has a os400 as a operating system and it is called iSeries. Its a midrange server as BI said and it has green screen and all license program is already embedeed and you just have to pay for the license to activate it.

Or go to the ibm site and search for as400 for info..
