AS/400 (a.k.a iSeries), SafeStone and Advanced System 36

Hello,

I hope things are going well...I have a question and I hope everyone will bear with me. I have visited the SafeStone website and they aren't specific about which versions or architectures of AS-OS/400 they support. I may have to do a demo on SafeStone and the question I have has to do with the versions/architectures of 400/i Series are supported or will run SafeStone to the extent necessary to gain useful test data. The potential demo machine is an AS/400 running OS 400 version 5.1 (which is fairly current) but is an Advanced System/36 machine and is maybe 15 years or so old (RGB monitor). Would this machine be an acceptable demo for this product or is it way out of date (couldn't provide valid test data?). It can be reconfigured as needed, I just want to know if I should even try. OK - This is from the requestor - I've determined that the most recent PTF req'd for this package is R881000731, and I think I have it, but it isn't obvious!!! How do I determine for sure? IBM's website for this is maddening! I have to note that this a PERSONAL machine, not a business machine, so I have no way of getting support except on my own. Well, I guess IBM is willing to help me for the low, low price of US$310 an hour (which I don't have handy). I do have a list of PTFs installed on this machine from the machine itself, but what I want to know is if this particular PTF is included amongst them, and DSPPTF is NOT HELPING right now. Also, the naming convention is throwing me off. I've tried Google Searches as well as IBM searches on R881000731 and got zero. Sorry to be a pain!

That PTF number doesn't really look right. Usually the PTF naming convention is aannnnn, where "aa" are letters and "nnnnn" are numbers.

BUT, trying to figure out what SafeStone was, you're right; they list is as such.

Try using the "go ptf" command, and then select option 5.
You'll need to know the program you are doing it for (ie 5769999 for AS/400 Licensed Internal Code) and the version of the OS you're running.

Thanks! I think I am OK - I tried your suggestion and it looks like I am ready to go, PTF wise. Unfortunately, now it comes to...since I can (based on the PTF level at least) run the software...I need to set this guy up for Ethernet access. It doesn't have an Ethernet card, and I just bought one. I think I can figure it out, but I am not sure, at all. I got about a zillion pages of documentation with this fellow, but it's all written in IBMese. No need to respond (unless you want to), I really appreciate your help! Since its my personal machine, I am doing this particular AS/400 on my own (I know Tek-Tips is for professionals and I am one (though not on AS/400 specifically), but sometimes (as I'm sure you know)) its amazing how much you can learn on your own that helps you professionally, and sometimes its just as fun, if not more fun, to figure things out on a machine that won't kill your network if you play around with it.

Thank You again, and if you have any advice, or want to pass this message on to anyone else who might be interested in helping me out in this AS/400 journey, I would appreciate it.

Installing the network card should be rather easy. On the back of the server it should tell you what cards you can install and what needs to be where. So you should obviously put it in whatever slot you have left over.

From there, you need to configure it. Use the "GO NETWORK" command to show all network related commands for you.

You'll need to configure the line, set your IP address and submask, and make sure that the controller actually sees the card (which should be pretty much auto-magic).

I know it's not much help, but this is all i remember from when we did it!
