I have got a problem with a NT 4.0 SP6a Cluster and SQL 7.0 SP3. This is an Active/Passive SQL Cluster setup. The Active node1 backup is working find using the AS SQL Agent. But when the SQL resources are failed on to the passive node2 the backup fails with the following error.

E8602 Failed to read from database. (DBNAME=master, EC=Backup Agent Error - (127) "Error at virtual Device set. Please check the SQL Server VDI.LOG)

The VDI.LOG out is below

Things tried:

Reinstalled the SQL Agent and SP3 for AS. Followed cluster install guide on the arcserve support site.

Checked arcticle relating to error E8602. This states that updated to SQL SP2 should fix the issue but the SQL Cluster is at SP3. The file in questions is the same version.

Also this is a fresh install of SQL 7.0 SP3 (i havn't upgrade from SQL 6.5.

Questions:
Has anyone out there have the same configuration that works ?

Does any one know how to fix this ?

Sorry to answer my own question but i just read the manual.

The SQL Virtual Server is always remote. The SQL Virtual Server is listedunder the MSCS icon. Therefore it must be backed up through the network or the preferred shares under the MSCS icon in the Backup Manager. It should not be backed up through the local machine or the SQL Virtual Server icon.

i.e local machine backup do not work with SQL Clusters

Hi,

Just to let you know..

When you install the sql agent use "virtual sql server" name.

The backups should be done thru the "virtual machine"..
See the cluster administrator window and the topmost name will be your "virtual machine"...

thanks,
baba
