Artificial time line

I've been reading lots of these items and seems that somewhere, someone said something about adding timelines or time series dimensions (I think).

I'm looking at financial data by year/month and there are periods where there is no data. It's annoying to see holes in the grid of information. Is this the type of place where a separate timeline would be of benefit?
