Arrow symbols uarr, uArr etc

I don't seem to be able to get ↑ (up-arrow) and ⇑ (double up-arrow) to render correctly and consistently across browsers. The uarr looks useless in a small font at least and, while the uArr renders OK in Firefox, it renders as a square in IE6.

If I use the numeric equivalents (↑ and &#8657 I get the same symptoms.

Should I just use a graphic?
