I need some help on setting up an array table to achive this fuction indicated here:


This swf is only a animation therefore I'm not sure how to do this in action script??.

Just explain what items you are wanting in your array. I just recently figured out how to set them up and now I use them for everything. They are great! Ya' Gotta Love It!

besides this crossword he's trying to create jeff, you say you use arrays all the time..give me some circumstances that come up where it is good to use arrays, and what would be the immediate benifits from them?

never used them before..curious!!

one I used recently... I was setting up some date actionscript on a website. The only problem was the months in Flash are listed as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12... I wanted January, February, etc. you get the idea.

I simply created an array that listed the names of all 12 months and when it pulled the month number off of the system clock it would know what the name was by the position.

Arrays will actually count positions.... it knows position 6 would be June, position 7 would be July etc.

This was just a quick one i did... as you can see the possibilities are endless.

I also converted the 24 hour clock to a 12 hour clock this way.

Flash pulls the hours 1-24 off of the system clock... a total of 24 positions. I simply created an array which listed the hours 12-11am and 12-11pm.

Go to and you will see the time and date at the bottom. This is the result of 3 different arrays.

The greeting at the top left looks at the hours of the day to determine whether it should greet you with "Good Morning", "Good Afternoon", or "Good Evening". Those are just basic if statements. Ya' Gotta Love It!

One really cool idea I had a while back was to create a flash movie with a dark blue background graphic placed over the white stage color. It would look at the hour of the day on a 24 hour clock and set the alpha of the background accordingly.

12 midnight being completely dark blue(0% Alpha) and 12 midday it would be almost 100 % Alpha and the white movie background would be dominant.

This was accomplished using an array...also 24 positions. Each one was a different alpha setting depending on what I wanted it to be for that hour of the day or night.

It was nothing that I will ever use probably but I thought it was awesome! I may post the .fla file on here when I get time. Ya' Gotta Love It!

and by the way jeff if i'm not mistaking that is the second version of that site is it not?.looks alot better then the first..not that nothing was wrong with the first just that this round looks good..nice work..and i see what you mean about the arrays coming in handy!!

This is the 2nd version. It took me forever to convince them it needed a facelift...now they brag like it was their idea...lol. Ya' Gotta Love It!

well...it is set at 16kbps mono. I also have it set to stream with a 10 second buffer. Originally it was over 3000k ... with these settings the entire file size is under 500k and over 400k of that is streaming in. Ya' Gotta Love It!
