I am making some calendars and if I use a master page item I cannot place a graphic to go underneath this. Is this common? I'm sure that I have been able to do this in the past. If I don't use the master page and just start on page one placing a graphic so it shows through works just fine. Not a big deal but just wondering about this. Thanks

Are you using PM6.5? Even 7.0 can be picky about the placement and the type of graphics used on master pages.

As with all graphics in PM, use only TIF or EPS, and use File>Place to place them. Never copy/paste to bring in graphics. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

I am using PM 7.0 and this particular graphic is a tif. And, no I never copy/paste into PM...always place. Does that help you to help me?

You are doing everything right in what type of graphics you use and how you place. I rarely use graphics on a master page, but I know they are tricky if used in layers.

Are you placing the graphics on the master page.. or the calendar? What is the master page item? Master page items display behind all other objects on publication pages regardless of how the layers are arranged.. I suspect your problem lies there.

Have you tried >Element>Arrange on the publication pages to arrange the layers? Sorry.. these may be stupid questions, but sometimes we overlook the obvious. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Not stupid questions at all as you are correct...generally speaking it is just one little thing that gets overlooked.

On my master page I have just the calendar itself - no dates or anything. I have placed the graphic on page one but that is where I cannot get it to go back using the element arrange. It just will not go back. Yet if I place it on the master page it will go back. Basically what I was trying to do was a calendar with different graphics for each month.

also tried to put it on a seperate layer and then moved the layer down. I know that works in photoshop but apparently not in pagemaker.

Thanks for your help.

Are you using the calendar plugin from PM.. or is the calendar a table or a graphic? if it is a graphic.. what sort. if a table.. from what source?

PM does not handle tables well.. even if you use Adobe Table 3.0 which basically bites. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Nope, not using the plug in as I didn't care for it and had to tweak it too much for waht I wanted. Basically I just drew it myself using the lines (came out pretty good too if I may say so!!) I don't mind the tables through adobe table if you know exactly what you want otherwise you end up going back and forth too much.

I am stumped... basically it seems that lines drawn on a master page cannot be anything but the backgorund... I tried to duplicate your calendar and have the same problem. I guess your best bet is to group all the lines you used in creating your calendar and just copy/paste them onto each page. (It is okay to copy/paste items from within pagemaker to another PM page.. just don't copy/paste items form a source outsie PM).

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Thanks for your help anyway. I'm glad that you tried it and could not get it to work either. At least I know that it is not me! And as I said it is not urgent as there are workarounds such as copy/paste or just not put it on the master page. I was just curious about it though. Seems sort of silly that what is on the master page seems to stay in the back. Thanks again for trying to help.
