Before you laugh at me, note that i've never even touched win2kserver or nt4 or any server OS for that matter..

I setup our server with win2k server - i installed active directory, dns and let my router handle the dhcp

Now, i named my server nighthawk.ca - according to the install help files - as this is the domain name that my company has registered.

.. woo, fine n dandy - except for the fact that now, the clients 2k pro computers can't go to the nighthawk.ca web site - as it's stil hosted by another company. I have to use my web hosts IP addy to connect to my email and the site.

Is there anyway i can tell server that if it gets an internet request (web or email), to forward it to the actual IP or domain that my host alloted me?

TIA!!! (star for anyone who gets this - i'm lost) Scott Cybak

Is your website really "nighthawk.ca," or is it " I assume the latter. In DNS, create a new host (A) record called " and assign it the IP address of the web site that's at the hosting company. If you have to, get someone off-site to ping the web address and give you the IP address. Once you've added that record you shouldn't have trouble getting your internal clients to the site.

If you really named your server the same thing as your domain, your server will probably be called "nighthawk.nighthawk.ca" or "nighthawk.ca.nighthawk.ca" rather than just "nighthawk.ca." You need to create a new host (A) record with no actual name (yes, just a blank field) that maps to your remote hosted server. That will map the servername "nighthawk.ca" to the offsite server.

Alright, purple star for that one!!

Now, how bout my email - i used to have to use the pop3 setting of "nighthawk.ca" as they don't have a pop3.nighthawk.ca method.

I'm such a pain! Scott Cybak

OOP, i forgot to mention that the server is

servername.nighthawk.ca

nighthawk.ca is just the active dir name - i think - am unsure really :S

btw - i had another thing to ask - i want to set VPN so i can do work from home - but our router uses NAT to share our broadband internt - i think i can disable this, but, i want the server to stay secure from normal people logging in with some of my luser's cheesy passwords.. is this hard to do? can u suggest any sample reading?

Thanks again!! Scott Cybak

You may not need to do anything at all to get your mail to work. Try it. If it doesn't work, create an MX record in the "nighthawk.ca" zone on your DNS server with no name and give it the remote host's IP address.

Who's your Daddy?

As far as your VPN goes, I recommend loading Terminal Services on one of your W2K servers in Administrative mode. Then allow port 3389 on your firewall to map to that server and load Terminal Server Client on your home system. Then you could work remotely on that W2K server with whatever software it has loaded on it.

Your router may have some special VPN support, but I can't say much about it without knowing which brand and model you are using.
