On this home page if you do a search on toronto through browswer you don,t get anything. But if you do view source, you see toronto with in a div statement few times.

but perhaps you didn't notice that it is also in the most important part of the page for SEO, so the hidden text isn't doing much for them.

Look at the title of the page!

Of course hidden text can help in some engines, as do all of the spam techniques, otherwise they wouldn't be used. It's purely up to you to make the descision whether the short term gains are worth the risk.

But their amateurish attempts are just ludicrous. the amount of text they have hidden could easily be worked into the visible text with no risk at all.

Overall a site by designers with zero clue about search engines.

thats true they can have have all this text visible. So you are saying in the long wrong it is not good. Bcz search engine will eventually find out about this spam technique and will drop their this good rating that the have right now....

It may, it may not, it depends on how serious the SE decide the spam is when it gets a look over.

They only have rankings for that phrase in Yahoo which in real terms is probably worth diddly squat for conversions.

Most spam methods are only short term anyway,some methods do last longer than others but eventually they all get caught out and filtered or penalised. Hidden text is unlikely to be ever subject to a automatic penalty as it has many ways of being hidden so it will have to be manually adjusted.
