I'm looking to do two things, set a policy that control's the power settings of every computer on my network to be set to always's on (over a 100 PC's). Also, we have student accounts that are so locked down that Software Update Services do not run, so is it possible to have an administrator account login in the background each night, so that updates can be installed? All of the machines are XP.

Power management isn't standard.
As for SUS it should run as a service account so the student account level shouldn't matter are you sure it's setup correctly, i never have this issue with it in colleges admitedly we do use WSUS.
