Are shares required for published apps to work

I have had trouble getting users on Metaframe 1.8/Win2000
to use a published application. I set up the area where the
application was stored and created a share in Win2000 and gave users read access to the share. Now they can access the application, is this necessary?

The users certainly need local access to where the application is installed - normally I'd install them to a drive which is using the default share (e.g. N$) and give users read access to the relevant folders; You shouldn't have to share each application folder separately.
