I've been using a Seagate DDS4 drive for some time and have many tapes, however recently it broke down.

I've repaced the drive with a HP DDS4 C5683, which appears to have been a mistake!

The HP will backup and restore new data perfectly, but it will not read the old Seagate backups properly. It starts to read the backup, but then fails with a 'media or hardware' error.

Is there any known incompatability between Seagate and HP DDS4 drives? I'm using the XP backup utility.

HP and Seagate DDS4 drives are supposed to be compatible. Was the backup set that you are trying to restore backed up with XP backup also? If so, you may need to "Import" the media before you can restore it.
