I have a stack of assorted vendor patch cables and those that have the 568A or B marked on the cable seem to be color coded wrong. Those with 568A have white/orange, orange in pins 1 and 2 and 568B have white/green, green in 1 and 2. Does anyone know what that is all about?

It sounds like they have simply been labeled incorrectly. 568B should obviously be white/orange-orange, and 568A white/green-green.

The T568A and T568B designations are 8-position modular jack wiring standards. I have never seen that designation on a patch cord. Patch cords are wired as straight thru pin-for-pin or crossover type. You might want to consult the TIA standard for more info about this.

They are marked incorrectly. It makes no difference unless you cut them up and need to rely on the color coding. As long as they are wired straight through with the same pinout on both ends I wouldn't worry about it.

Are the labels removable?

Marked incorrectly. As for the never seen 568A and 568B patch cables comment...I have rarely ever seen anything wired straight through. 99.99% of every patch cable i have seen (1000's of them by the way) has been either a 568A or B. I have also seen a lot of T1 crossovers and some other really odd token ring and odd-ball custom cables over the years too. But straight through...not so many, although they would work fine...

I was miserable, then someone told me "smile and be happy, things could be worse". So I smiled and was happy...and they were right, things were worse!

I never thought of that before, just mostly relied on the Feet measurements to guess out lengths on my bulk cable when making cables. Just looked at 1 of my cables, 4PAIR UTP 24AWG 75 C CAT5E (UL) TIA/EIA-568-B.2....

While I Terminate with 568B I could just as easily terminate with 568A Although as it was mentioned it doesnt really matter what the colors are at the terminations on patch cables as they are Straight through or Crossover, what you are plugging it into doesnt know that it is talking to a green wire instead of an orange wire and vice versa
as long as the cables dont have 568b on 1 side and 568A on the other (unless you want a crossover..)you are ok..

Don't confuse TIA/EIA-568-B (which is a standard) with 568-A and 568-B (which are wiring patterns)

You could crimp your patch cords with any color code you desire, as long as you keep the pairs correct.

i.e., pins 1&2 are a twisted pair, 3&6 are a twisted pair, 4&5 are a twisted pair, and 7&8 are a twisted pair.

I don't know why anyone would care if their patch cords were 568-A or B on both ends, as long as both ends are the same!
