Has anyone experienced higher temperatures AFTER fitting one of these? Arctic Cooling NV5 rev2 6800 series.

I just replaced the noisey stock Asus cooler on my 6800GT(it was driving me nuts) with one of these, I've used the supplied Arctic Cooling paste (I know it's not brilliant) but I was expecting at least similar temps to those I had before.

I wrote everything down before and now after.

Before with stock Asus: Ambient 51C with Core at 65C idle

With Arctic Cooling NV5: " 47C " " " 68C idle

Both taken after an hour idle

I work in PC repair shop so I know everything is fitted correctly and with sufficient paste.
I realise even the NEW temp is fine, it's just higher than it was when I expected at least equal
I also note Ambient has come down, this is indoubtedly down to the new fan exhausting directly OUT the case.
But this makes the new fans results look even worse because it has the benefit of lower ambient air temps, in theory it should be better for that reason alone.

And yes it is quieter, I'm happy about that lol

paparazi,

Glad you have some of your noise undercontrol.

I had this similar situation with a Quadro card.

I was stumped for a while, and frustrated that GPU temps did not drop as expected I switched to ArticSlver for the interface & this only provided an approx 2C drop as I had expected.

I got to looking at this situation closely & determined the following: (you may come to the same conclusions or not)

1. the original fan only supplied air directly to the GPU HS.

2. Air flowing from this cooled the Video Mem & was expelled to th case.

3. The ArticCool unit shrouds the GPU&HS and the Mem and is a flow over/through system vs direct blow on the GPU.

4. Vid Mem gets Hot and the air contacts this first and then proceeds to the GPU & is exhausted out of the case.

5. Bottom line, all things are within acceptable range albeit a few degrees warmer than a direct blow system but as you have realized much more quiet.

Hope this seems like a plausible theory.

I couldn't help but notice that you ambient seems high at 51C. Do you also have a campfire in your case??

I normally run in a room that averages 27-28C and the inside case temps are usually 38-42C or about 10C lower than what you expressed.

Hmm, not sure wether you looked very close at either of these two coolers
.
1) The stock cooler supplies air to the copper GPU heatsink and an additional aluminium heatsink that sits on the ram chips (two piece heatsink)

2)True, which heats up the case

3)Not true as neither fan actually sits ontop of the GPU but rather to the side and forces air across the heatsink fins so not sure what you mean by "direct blow on GPU" as they work the same

4)Not true, the ram chips are covered on both coolers, the original has a seperate heatsink where as the Arctic Cooling is an all in one heatsink, but neither expose the ram chips to the air.
The originally however does expell it's heated air internal (thats why case internals read higher) with the stock cooler.

5)Exceptable readings, YES but according to literature this cooler is supposed to be more efficient than stock, that combined with lower internal temps due to it's external exhaust, SHOULD lead to lower temps.

My concern is not that they aren't any lower, more that they are actually worse
Thanks for your comments.

paparazi,

Sorry 'bout the mis on this being an ASUS card I glossed over that & focused on the NVidia nomenclature.

As stated I used the ArticCool on a Pny Quadro 1300 which is cooled differently in stock form and loud to boot.
