ARCserveIT For NT : any good? 1

I'm debating between Veritas' Backup Exec and ARCserveIT to run my network backups, any suggestions?<br>

I have used both. Arcserve a long time ago and I didn't like it. The new version may be better. I use Backup Exec now and like it a lot. You can download a trial version of it from the web site. Ver 7.3 is the current version for NT.

I have also used both and agree that of the two, BackupExec is the way to go. My NT Servers had a nasty tendancy to perform a dump whenever someone accessed our SQL Server database when the backups were running (even when the SQL and Open File agents were installed/configured). I never had that problem with BackupExec.<br>

from The BEI Corporation. I am currently using their software and have found their Tech Support more responsive than either ARCserveIt or BackupExec.

I currently use Arcserve on my NT server with the addons to backup SQL and open datafiles. I am having no problem with it in the last year.<br>

My older experience with Backup Exec on my Novell server was bad. When we had to do a critical restore...all the files were there, but half the file dates were 00/00/00. Since these were programming files, it took forever and a day to verify which were the newest versions.

I have also used both in NT and NetWare environs, with SQL and Exchange. Personally I prefer Arcserve and I have not had any problems with it. But looking at the other responses it might be very much dependent on your specific configuration and apps, I would suggest getting hold of trial versions for both, try them and see for yourself which you prefer.

We have been using ArcserveIT for two years, and have experience no problems with it. Presently they are giving away an upgrade to version 6.61 to all 5.5 thru 6.5 users. Actually I would warn you to be careful which tape/DLT/etc.. backup unit you purchase. We have two ADIC SCSI DLT cartridge arrays and when problems arise they are nothing but headaches. Make sure that whatever you buy has a manual release for the cartridge should it get stuck in the loaded postion and won't release (like a CDROM drive ). Otherwise, you may find yourself with an expensive repair or a very expensive boat anchor.
