Hello all, We have A Windows 2000 PDC with Exchange 5.5 loaded. If we go into the backup wizard and submit a job, when we select what we want to back up, no exchange options appear. The backup completes successfully, but I am not sure if any exchange info is backed up. It looks like it isn't due to the inability to select Exchange from the directory tree.

If we go Into Arcserve Manager and Select Manager---> Backup, we get the option to do Exchange Information Store and Exchange Brick level backups. No matter what we select, whether it be one file folder or ANYTHING on the local machine, excluding exchange, we get errors. If we submit the job to RUN NOW, it packages the job and the job status screen appears. Then the job is immediately tagged as DONE with no backup occurring. The activity log shows

E4101 Unable to login to database engine (DATABASE=ARCSERVE, EC=-2005)

I am about to give up on this software so any help will be GREATLY appreciated. All Complaints Will Be Routed To /dev/null

Hmmm, yah got a database problem, be it the ARCserve database. Check the enrionmental variables and check for CATPATH and if its pointing to the correct location. Also delete the RNNAME variable in the variable, then re initialise the database and do a quick backup to see if this solved it...

Have you set up the ARCserve system account with Administrator rights? as well as setting the primary group to domain admins (if in a domain), and added the advanced rights to

- log on locally
- log on as a service
- and act as part of the operating system????

After all of this, initialise the database and try the backup again, if you still get the error then you will need to get the database engine service to log on as the arcserve system account instead of local system..

Hope this helps,

Thanks man. I had actually set the Arcserve Database service to log on as the system account right after I posted this and it worked. I had to shut down the server to actually get the DB service to restart but no biggy.

Thanks man for your quick response. You're the coolest.

I have another question.

I cannot under any circumstances get AS2000 to back up my exchange information store. It will do a brick level back up, but they are taking literally hours and hours to complete. When I try to back up my Information Store, I get this error

E8604 Failed to start backup (DBNAME=dbaexch, EC=Backup Agent Error -- (331) "Insufficient Privilage. Please check user privilages."

I know this obviously has something to do with privilages.

I have a user account created named dbagent. I have this account as a member of Domain admins, Enterprise Admins, Admins, Backup operators, with domain admins set as the primary group. It has log on locally, log on as a service, and act as part of the operating system rights.

In arcserve server admin i have set dbagent as the system account. I have created a mailbox for dbagent and have populated it with emails. In exchange administrator I have given dbagent Service Account Admin rights for the organization, site, and server.

I have set the Arcserve Discovery Service, RPC Backup Agent Service, Database Service to log on as dbagent. When setting up the job, i right click where available and set the security to use dbagent's account info.

I have a trust with another NT4 doain going on. Their accounts are mirrored on my server. Could that have something to do with it?

Thank you very much for any help you may give. All Complaints Will Be Routed To /dev/null

Oh yeah, I also loaded outlook 98 on the server and set it up to use the dbagent account. And went into the exchange backup agent config and set it to use the dbagent account. Remember, brick levels work fine!

THANKS! All Complaints Will Be Routed To /dev/null

Is this local or remote? Could you try in arcserve backup job to right click on the my computer (if local) or the machine (if remote) and then put in the domain admin username and password, but you must use DOMAIN\Username nomenclature. Also, the backup agent your using, i.e. dbagent, can't have an alias that has the first three letters the same, so if there is another mailbox with dba***** as the mailbox name then they will clash.

Try the domain/username thing I think this is the problem. Also the arcserve system account does not need the dbagent authentication specifically for exchange, but if you have indeed given the rights you mentioned then it shouldn't really make any difference.

If all else fails, try to log in the job engine with the arcserve system admin account. Also, make sure your user is a part of backup operators.

good luck
