Try deleting the tape.log from the arcserve\log directory.

This sounds like an obvious solution, but view the log files in Arcserve manager. Not at the server console if it's netware. But the windows managementr application. If you view the log in there, the errors are clickable and clicking them usually gives an explanation/solution. Hope that helps
