Hi,

I am having a heck of a time trying to backup GroupWise 55 running on Netware 5. Following is what I have done,

1. Loaded ArcServe on the GroupWise server, loaded Open File agent and ran the backup.

2. Loaded ArcServe agent on the GroupWise server and Tried to back it up remotely from a differnt Netware serve which was running open file agent as well.

3. loaded Agent for NT server and tried doing it this way.

4. Installed Backup_exec with the open file option and tried to back up the server.

All of the options above resulted in the same thing. That the GroupWise server does not finish backing up all of the files, and keeps trying, Server hangs,( uses high CPU etc) and for users it becomes extreamly slow.

in each case I have to reboot the server. sometimes if I just stop the backup that works but mostly I have to reboot.

I am assuming the problem occurs when it is trying to back the open files, either in the post office or sys. but why it can't do it I have no idea please advise.

Please let me know if someone out there have had similar problem, and suggestions on how I might be able to get a good back up.

Thank You.

What SP are you running? I run NetWare 4 so I don't think I'll be much help here, this year I am taking the entire company to NetWare 6 (ohhh what a trip). I would take a look at the Monitor screen (if one exists) and keep an eye on your Packet Receive Buffers and Directory Cache buffers (if they exist). I ran into a similar problem running Veritas Backup Exec on my NetWare 4.x box, I increased those settings and it corrected the issue. Really don't know if this will help you at all sorry I don't have more indepth answers for you......

*end users are just like computers, some you can work with...others just need a simple reBOOTing to fix their problems.*

I am running service Pack 6. And yes I have looked at the message screens in ArcServe, and in backup_exec I have looked at the logs, and it looks like it just can't copy all of the files and keeps retrying for some reason....

I hope this makes more sense.
Sobak thanks for trying and Goodluck on the Move.... I can see you having fun...:)

What time are other "behind the scenes" Groupwise post office cleaning or check operations running?

I know there is a midnight default job that runs.

I had a similar problem and rescheduled so that the backup it starts at 1 am. It probably also didn't hurt that I set Arcserve to disallow any logins during the backup.

I run NW5.1 sp3 with GW5.5 backingup with Arcserve 6.6 on a NW 4.2 sp9 server. On the GW server I'm also running the Backup Agent for GW (which uses the Backup Agent for Open Files) and the Push Agent for NetWare v6.6. It works great but before I added the Backup Agent for GW I had alot of problems. I had tried previously using just the Open File agent but only when I got the GroupWise agent did it smooth out. I haven't had a bad backup (related to the GW server) since.

Cheers,

Mark ;-)

I agree with Mark on the Backup Agent for GW running on top of OFA. I run NW5 SP6a, GW5.5 and Arcserve6.6 on a single server and everything backs up fine except for some of the MAC name space support files on my user vol. There are a lot of settings on the server that CA and Novell recommend changing the values on to allow Arcserve to run smoother. And someplace I read that GW should not be run on an NSS Vol,
I also read that OFA has problems with a NSS Vol as well. You need to do a lot of research in both the CA and Novell Knowledge Base to find a lot of this stuff, but it's there somewhere. I've used Arcserve 4.x, 5.x and now 6.x so a lot of the Info I've seen is now old.
I also run the Changer Option with Arcserve for a DAT Autoloader and although tough to get set up initially it works great.
