I've been it using for a year (arcserve 6.5 then 6.61 for NT) and I've had so many problems with this product, most of them database related, but also compatibility problems (e.g poor support for some OS) and all kinds of other various little problem here and there so in the end I'm starting to think Arcserve just doesn't CUT it for me. But does it for anyone ? I mean, is there somebody out there who thinks this is a good backup solution ? I'm skeptical...

Arcserve is a pile of ____ . I have the same problems too. It's sort of like the old beater car that you can drive if you know all the different ways it can break down and how to fix them...

No it isn't very good, prefer Veritas either Backup Exec or Netbackup, continuous problems with ArcserveIT.

If you think Arcserve for nT is bad, I was trying to use AS7.o for Novell for a year!
I found out through all the postings on CA's forum that even they admit it blows!
They would admit to problems and say there was no known fix...
speed
password issues
database corruption
unable to restore
manager console errors, the list goes on and on

Get Veritas!

well this is interesting, so we 're all banging our heads against the wall, wandering why on earth we're using this software when there seem to be better stuff out there.

I have used AS7 for NetWare at 2 different companies and, excluding the usual problems that were resolved by the odd patch or two, I have not had any serious issues.

Don't know what all the fuss is about?? -----------------------------------------------------

Therlocker brings up a valid analogy. ArcServe is like the old beater car that works fine if you know what to look for and how to fix it. The catch is that it takes at least a year or more to learn the quirks about your system, in which time your backup system stinks and you have no real job security.

However, don't think that Veritas BackupExec is all harps and fluffy clouds either. It has its own quirks and problems. Take a look in the BackupExec forum here in TekTips and see what our compatriots over there face.

I think that what it comes down to is that backup systems for the Wintel client-server world are seriously lacking. If you have any Unix or AS/400 experience (and I have very little of either) then you know that you can make those backup systems jump through hoops and do backflips. I don't know what the problem is, but there are no backup packages for Windows/Novell that work well that I know of.

I guess we're just stuck with what we have. Let's make the best of it and do what we can. Monkeylizard

I administer two seperate domains, one uses Arcserve and the other Veritas (two different companies). Both products are tempremental (with the emphasis on mental), but Arcserve is the least stable for a lot of things. Having said that, I have had to re-install Veritas three times just to get it to work properly with Win 2000 sp2

Guys,
It's true. ARCserve in it's older days was a bit dodgee. In fact, not quite for release. hence the recall of ARCserve 6.5 and the free upgrade to 6.61. 6.61 was ok for it's time, but guys, the time is over. ARCserve 2000 is quite good, for all the new things that are out, it complies quite well. Sure it has a few bugs, but they all do. And yes, the database isn't the hardest thing in the world to corrupt, but if you keep it service packed, and well maintained, then it will treat you right!

Advice? Don't apply service pack 3 just yet ;)
