I am running ARCserve 6.61 sp2a on NT4.0 sp6a with a remote dbagent backing up exchange 5.5 sp4. Since i have managed to get the bricks level to backup, it now starts hanging at 99%. The servers are both IBM netfinity 3000.

Does anyone know how to get around this problem?

You may not have a problem.
On the Arcserve computer, check your running process names in task manager the next time it hangs at 99%.
Do you see the mergecat.exe?
The status will show 99% until the catalog files from the backup are merged into the database.
In task manager, If your COMMIT CHARGE exceeds PHYSICAL RAM, this will be slow. Add more memory.
Check your Arcserve database.
Is it being updated? Look at some restore views.
Did the drive hosting the ASDB ever run short of space, corrupting the ASDB?
Let me know what you think...

Thanks Jim,

The drive had run out of space and corrupted the database. I cleared out the "r" files in the databse folder and re-started the database engine, it has fixed the problem.
