ArcServe for NT 6.61-- Merging Sessions

Is the merging of sessions at the end of the backup necessary? I am using only one backup machine. The merging sessions takes a looonng time.
Is there a way to avoid merging? Is it necessary to merge to do restores? CA website didnt help much....

If you don't merge at the end of the job, you would have to merge the contents of a tape to the database before you could do a restore from that tape.
