It seems that no one can answer this question, not even CA. so you must be a Guru if you can !!!

All I want to do, and probably many small size firm IT guy too, is to perform backup to another hard drive on another server over the network. Using Arcserv 2000, I am able to backup to the local hard drive using File Systems Device Config. However, this method doesn't work on backing to network drive. I try mapping it first, making shortcut to fool the Arceserve server. Apparently, It would perform the backup when I was able to fool the server with shortcut redirecting to the network drive. However, when the backup is finsh and said it's sucessfully backup, the network drive is blank. nothing was written to it. I test the same backup to local folder, and it got written fine. so can anyone tell me how to backup to a network harddrive/folder without needing extra agent to purchase.

To solve this problem

1-Go to services on BrightStor Server and find “BrightStor Tape Engine”

Service ,Right Click àproperties, select Log On tab use the a Domain Account

Which is having a full control on the remote shared folder.

2-Stop and start the “BrightStor Tape Engine” Service

3-On the remote machine you have to change the sharing permissions on the shared folder and add the Domain Account which you have used while installing BrightStor.
also you have to mape the shared folder a drive letter

4- run Device Configuration and recreate the FSD files System Disk and restart

the tape Engine.

5- When you go to BrightStor Enterprise and select Managerà Device

the Tape Should appear as <Blank Tape> then you can format it and give it a name

If the tape appear as <No Media in Drive > it mean still you have a problem in sharing

permission, check the remote machine shared folder and follow the above steps again

Note: If BrightStor installed using the Domain Account you just need to follow from step # 3

Note:Make sure you share the subfolder(if the folder you are trying to backup to is subfolder) not only the root folder.

Thanks for your quick reply Mohamdr. However, it did not work.
It is still showing as <no media in drive>

I check all the permission on the targeted computer(even make the arcserve service account as local admin on remote machine) and the share and ntfs permission is set to full control on the drive and folder. I even make everyone group to full control just to test it and still no luck. I also tested to another hard drive on another machine just to see if my hard drive is bad. but still no luck.

one question I have, let say if it did work, that means I cannot log off since logging off will disconnect the drive. correct ??

I find something on the CA website that I need to patch with QO11058. I have already installed Arcserve Sp3 and Sp4. This patch looks like it's before SP4, I don't know if I should apply the patch.

If on my arcserve server, I created a shortcut that direct to the netowrk drive, for example \\machinename\d, then
when creating FSD, I will get error "Invalid folder name"

However, If I go into my network place (windows 2000 server) and go to add netowrk place, and then point to the remote drive or folder, then it see it as " C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\NetHood\NAS on computer" where NAS is the drive name I assign. Doing it this way, when I go to device manager, it then recognize it as blank media. I am even able to format it. However, just as I previous described, nothing was written on the remote drive even it will said format finished and show all the info such as device #, and everything. So what/where did it formated ???

Thanks for your reply and it will be great if this can be resolved.
