Hello,

We are having a major issue with our tape backup system. When running our tape backup of our SAN, at about 60% through the proccess our SAN suddenly locks up. It causes all of users to be dissconnected from the SAN, and the SAN requires a hard boot to be brought back up as it is unresponsive.

We never had a problem until our tape drive died on us, and we replaced it with a newer model. Even then it was working for a bit, and suddenly just started locking up our SAN.

What is really odd to me, is that when doing a logical backup using ARCserve from the SAN to a backup server we have no problems in completing the backup, but only when we do the same backup with the tapes is when we have the issue.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

oooh sounds like and old and tired SAN Switch.
What do you have a 1gb SAN and a LTO 3 or 4 which can write data at more than 3gb.
That backup is probably pushing more data through the switch than it can handle.
Get the SAN admin in on this, enable logging on the switch, reproduce the problem. ck for high error count at a port.

just a few ideas
