Hi there,

I wonder if any one can help me with this query, I have a remote server that runs Arcserve V11, at the end of each week a new magazine is inserted into the tape library, is there a way that I can get Arcserve to do an inventory, so it has info on the new tapes.

I have previously stop/starting the tape services on other servers to get round this problem, but it seems a bit of a heavy handed way to go about doing it, it also not working to well on this particular server, whereby the tape service does not restart once it stopped, I have not got to the bottom of this issue, but if anyone has any better idea's on the above query then I would most grateful to here from them, thank you.

Sorry Richard I'm a bit confused.

Do you mean getting Arcserve to automatically recognise that the magazine has been changed?

If not then all you do is right click on the tape library in device manager and do mount/unmount magazine. It will then get the information from each tape.

The tape service does this as part of its startup as well as you have found.

Hi there,

Yes, I would like Arcserve to automatically update itself without user interaction once the new magazine is inserted, I didn't make this too clear, sorry.

Interesting in the BrightStor forum there is a thread with the oposite complaint.

It is a function of the library to either notify or not notify the application that the door has been changed. Current ARCserve will automatically do an inventory when the library signals that the library door has been opened.

Thanks david,

I have never seen this happen either with 2000/v9/v11, any idea's what should I be checking first?

Do not select Quick Inventory in the Device Configuration utility. If that does not do it then it just might not work with this library. Ck with support for the library to see if it will or can be configured to send a door open signal to the application.

Has anyone found a way for Arcserve 11 or 9 to auto inventory when tapes are changed. In Arcserve 6.5 and 2000 I could do the pre job that started and stopped the tape engine. This does not work in AS 9 or 11.

Hi there Coal,

I haven't tried stopping/starting the services within Arcserve V9/11, but if you create a batch file to do this, and then set it as a scheduled task, that should do it.
