Hey everyone, interesting question I have.

I have a netware volume that has file compression enabled. When Arcserve 6.x backs up the data, I am assuming it is in compressed format as it is being read. My question is, if I am restoring a file that was originally compressed on the volume, does it get restored in compressed format, or during the restore is the file exploded to it's normal size?

Thanks in Advance
Mark C. Greenwood, Certified N
m_jgreenwood@yahoo.com

I have been working in the industry for a little more than 10 years. I hold a current CNE certification for Intranetware 4.11
and Netware 5. I also have my BS in MIS

The answer is - The state the file was in when it was copied to tape.
Assume the default compression on Novell = Compress after 7 days.
For the first 7 days the file on tape is uncompressed.
After 7 days it is compressed on tape.

When you restore the file, It will be restored in the condition it is on tape.
Example - full backup done once a month, partials daily
File created on day 1 copied to tape that night on a partial backup.
on day 12 the file was deleted (accidently) by a user. On the Volume it is/was Compressed. On tape it is uncompressed. Condition after restore Uncompressed.

The opposite is also true
Full back was done 12 days after file was created. Condition on tape compressed. The user opened the file but made no change. Condition on drive uncompressed. User wants last last full backup file restored. Condition after restore, Compressed.

However, to verify this I believe a Tech Support call to Computer Associates is in order.
David W.
