Ok people, you guys are my last resort. Let me tell you a story of tech support nightmares. I need to do this so people can follow the steps, and maybe catch the problem.
Sorry so long, but I felt that all of this info is needed.
We are currently running Nw 5.1 , sp3 Clib 5.90e
1) In mid december, our DLT 8000 died. I was 99% sure it was hardware. I had everything working fine with a few patches to Arcserve, but never installed the Consolidated Service pack. I called IBM tech support. As a troubleshooting technique, the had be patch ArcServe to current. I did so, the drive still failed, but now I was getting abends when the Universal Client Agent, Nwagent, was contacted by the Backup server to start pushing files. The backup would freeze, and sit.
2) IBM eventually admitted the drive was faulty, and sent me a new one. The abends still continued. Enter Arcserve.
3) They told me to update to clib 5.90e using 011205n.EXE from novell. Fair enough. However, this required an install of SP3 to work, so I did so on all 8 servers. Now I am at sp3 Clib 5.90e. When I try to load Arcserve manager and connect to the server, it can't login. Arcserve told me to clear phantom and magic entries from the registry, and no luck. What I believe is there is a new Winsock that is installed with Clib 5.90e. This may be causing the comunication problems. I still am running TCPIP from SP3. I will be installing 5.53l tomorrow morning, but that is my last ditch effort.
Here is a post on Novell pupport forums that I recently did.
I was told by Arcserve tech support to install 011210n5.exe, which is a clib
/ winsock update and server.exe patch for NW 5.1. In TID 2960943, it
explains that this version corrects a problem with the communication winsock
of Arcserve Manager :
REQUESTR:
- LookupService() was setting the IP address length to 14 (16 returned from
Winsock - 2). The real length is 4, so now this is hardcoded. The 14 byte
length was causing a stack overwrite in DSGetNearestDirectoryService().
Defect 282453 This fixed an issue where Arcserve workstation manager
couldn't login.
Arcserve manager( 7) worked fine with just SP3, however when I applied this
patch, I got the communication problems that this patch was supposed to fix.
My first thought is I need the newest TCPIP patch, but that is just a guess.
Does anyone have any suggestions or know the correct course of action here ?
Also, SCMD, which we don't use or need, is being loaded by Arcserve, but is failing. Here is the error message.
Server 5.00-918 Loader cannot find public symbol: Bindings for Modules SCMD.
Server 5.00-918 Loader cannot find public symbol: nlspDelBindConfig for
Modules SCMD.
Server 5.00-918 Loader cannot find public symbol: nlspDelBindConfig for
Modules SCMD
Server 5.00-1548 Load File referenced undefined public variable.
I hope someone can help me out, sorry so long. I guess if you have read it this far, you are in better shape than I am!!!!
