I am using ArcServe 6.6 on Novell 5.0. I have deleted some user home directories off of the network, but ArcServe still tries to back these directories up. It gives some errors that it can not find the directories and just sits there.

When I delete the ACTIVE backup job the server abends and must be rebooted. Any ideas?

If you select a drive you want to back up from the root, Arcserve will backup all files and directories under that drive and won't try to back up directories/files that are deleted.

As soon as you select files and directories not to backup, Arcserve takes a snapshot of what to backup. If directories/files in the snapshot are then deleted, Arcserve will complain.

Use filters to exclude files and directories and select drives from the root.

I would agree with IOWTECH on backing up by drives if possible.

If you backup drives, any new directory you create in that drive is automatically backed up.
If you backup directories, any new directory you create in that drive is not automatically backed up! Also any new files in the root directory will not be backed up e.g. F:\Donal.doc!

However if you still want to backup by directories (e.g. your backup tape cannot store everything from the file server), try the following.

Recreate the backup job up from scratch.

Don't use File\Open as it probably contains settings about directories you have deleted.
I admit that normally the best way is to use an existing file that is known to work. However in this case, try recreating the backup job.

Also be careful if you are backing up NDS objects that may have been deleted.
