Hi All,

Has anyone encountered increased throughput times using Arcserve 6.1 on a Novell Groupwise server? The throughput times have been increasing for about 2 weeks now, and what used to take about 4 hours takes 10. We are backing up about 14GB of data, and there has been no appreciable increase in the amount of the data.

The server is a compaq proliant ml370 running Netware 4.2. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

ZR

Are you running Arcserve on that server or bacing up from another server? Are you running the GW Agent? Open files in GW will slow the backup down without the GWAgent (it has open file bu capability). I found more & more users were staying logged in with notify open, that alone keeps the user db open. Check the Arcserve logs to see if it is retrying to backup files that are in use or open.

Good Luck,
Mark ;-)

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the reply.

>Are you running Arcserve on that server or bacing up from another server?

Arcserve is running on this server and the drive is attached directly to it. It is not being backed up across the wire.

I don't know. How can I find out?

There are several open files. Arceserve says that it tries them five times every five seconds. for 40 open files (my average) it's only adding about 16 minutes to the backup time. (is my math right?)

Anyway, for the last backup the through put is up again. It seems very inconsistent.

Thanks again for the reply,

ZR

The GW Agent is started seperately and has it's own screen on the console. It doesn't sound like open files is the problem but the GW agent will speed up your backup. Are you running the Inoculan Antivurs that comes with Arcserve? It seems to work the best with Arcserve as it only scans the backup not all tranactions on the server. If you are using an additional antivirus or a different antivirus that is scanning everything, that could be a definate slowdown. If so you might try disabling it during the backup.

How much ram in the server? The more the better.

Cheers,

Mark ;-)

Hi Mark,

>Are you running the Inoculan Antivurs that comes with Arcserve?

No, and there is no other virus scanning going on at the time. It's wierd. The last two days have been fine.

786 MB

???

Thanks,

Doug
