I have to erase each tape I insert before Arcserve will use it for backup.
I have gone to the "Modify job" option and selected options/
Backup media, " Overwrite same media, or blank media , or any media present" but it does not work, when I look again it has reset to the default option "Append to media"

If you are using either of the rotation options, media handling (ie append, etc.) is automatic. Instead of erasing tapes, you can simply move the tape from the Media Pool save set to the scratch set by dragging and dropping the media using the Media Pool Manager. If you set up the retention time on the media pool correctly, arcserve should move media to the scratch set in time for your backup. With small libraries it is often difficult to hold an entire rotation of tapes in the unit due to limited slot capacity. Use the "Append" option under GFS rotation to append daily incrementals to the same tape for a week, thereby saving slot space. Chris Horvath - True Data Storage Networks Inc. - New York City

Is your job set up to use media pools? After the job runs, is the tape labeled with a day of the week "MONDAY" or a highly descriptive label "F-xxxx-FRI 06/06/2001"? These types of labels indicate a rotation job. Rotation jobs use BLANK tapes or tapes from the SCRATCH SET of the MEDIA POOL for the SPECIFIC job. The RADIO BUTTON settings in OPTIONS for "APPEND to tape, USE ANY TAPE, etc." are ignored when a rotation job using a media pool is used. Let me know if I can help more...

Thanks for the tips, I did not really get into the media pool because I am only backing up to one tape device, I use a Compaq SLR 4/8 GB to back up a couple of servers and one tape is enough, I will look again at the PDF manual and give it a try, thanks guys
