Arcserve 2000 SP5 Multiple failure issues

I've look through the threads that are similar to what I am experiencing, but none of the recomendations have worked yet.
Primary 2 issues are this:
1. The backup never actually starts
or if it does:
2. The Database engine shuts down within 45 minutes of the job starting with nothing in the MS Event log.

I have applied all available patches and it still doesn't work, and I'm going on 4 days without a backup.

Run a Copy or Count job.
If it does not work try deleting the queue. Close the manager, stop the Job Engine, then start it up again.
If it works the problem is in the Tape Engine. Put the Tape Engine in debug and check the log.
