Hi,

Can the PV100T backup device be used with ArcServe 2000 to perform a disaster recovery? This device comes with the Dell 1600PE server.

I wish to restore the entire operating system from tape when disaster strikes.(and everything else)

I am using Windows 2000 server, I have read the computer associates web site(Arcserve). It advises to create the Win2k boot disks and then run the Boot Kit Wizard. This changes the boot disks so that I can restore from tape.
Then in a controlled environment I completly screw up the C: drive.
I then set about reinstalling Windows 2000 with my adapted boot disks. However I never get to the point where Arcserve is installed and the restore from tape begins.(I guess some part of Arcserve must be installed to do a restore).
All I end up doing is installing Windows 2000! No good! I want to restore Win 2K from the tape with all the applications I spent ages installing.

So now I'm wondering if it is the tape device that does not support this kind of disaster recovery.

Am I missing something?

Many thanks

Damien.

Make sure that SP4 and the DRO Sp4 are applied. Also make sure that the latest device patch from CA is applied. During the blue screen portion of the setup, if any raid controller drivers or drivers that are not included on the Windows installation media are needed, press F6 to be able to add those drivers. Need to know more information about any errors you are seeing.

Also, verify that the tape drive you are using is on the ARCserve certified device list.

Many thanks for your help.
I have since found out that I was modifying the boot diskettes using the wrong disaster recovery option.

I am now at the stage the boot diskettes 1 & 4 have been modified by the ArcServe disaster recovery program. This program also created 2 extra diskettes as was advised in the DR manual.

When I test the DR(by using the modified boot diskettes to install win2k), I get to the stage where I select the partition where win2k should be installed. I select the C: partition and press enter, immediatley after this I am requested to insert the Service Pack 1 CD!?

Do you have any idea why it is requesting the SP1 CD?
I cannot get past this section in the DR procedure.
Regards,

Hi,

GOT IT!!!! Only took two days!!!!!

As a test I installed win 2k (with SP2) using boot diskettes that were created using the bootdisk utility on the win2k server installation CD.
These diskettes were not modified by ArcServe. The installation completed without any problems.

The problem must be the Arcserve modified diskettes.

I looked at the file txtsetup.sif and found the problem.
The ArcServer DR program incorrectly modifies this file.
Remember I was using the SP2 Win 2k server CD(I did see the warning about SP3). However the DR program modified txtsetup.sif to look for the Service Pack 1! The lines you have to look for are as follows.

[SourceDisksNames.x86]
;I cannot remember what DR changed this to, but whatever it was it refered to SP1. The correct setting for SP2 is below
2 = %spcd%,\cdromsp2.tst,,\i386,1

;the line below was set to "Service Pack 1 CD". The correct setting for SP2 is below.
[Strings]
spcd = "Service Pack 2 CD"

;and finally

[SourceDisksFiles]
;these line below were set to sp1.cat and sp1.cab
sp2.cat = 2,,,,,,1,3,3
SP2.cab = 2,,,,,,_x,39,0,0

I changes these lines and the installation continues as normal. The restore has just completed, Windows 2000 and all the applications seem to be working correctly! Yipee!
