when i use 20/40 tape during the backup process, I get the message "*** Tape Alert *** The
following information is for Device [1]:" and then the Warning "W6905 The
tape drive is having problems writing data. The size of the media reduce" and backup stops on 24 GB and ask for the next media. My tape streamer is 20/40 ( SDT-10000 ), Arcserve 2000 recognize tape streamer and media as DDS4 but i get the above message. I install service pack 4 for Arcserve and i change 10 new media but the problems is still occur. If i use 12/24 tapes the backup works Ok. I upgrade the Tape streamer firmware without any good results. Pls HELP

Tape Alert is a message the tape drive sends to the application when it is having a problem. The Tape Alert is sending the warning that the drive is having Soft Write Errors.

Soft Write error is when the drive fails to write data to tape. So it moves the tape to the next block and tries again. This will continue until the drive either correctly writes the data or exceeds a preset threshold. If it does write the data each failed attempt is a Soft Write Error, if it fails altogether then it is a UDE Unrecoverable Data Error, or Media Error.

If the drive has the capacity to report these errors they will be recorded in the Media Database.

So in your case there are a lot of Soft Write Errors resulting in less data being written to tape. Try cleaning the drive and new tapes.
