Is there a way to determine the approximate size of a backup job created in Arcserve 2000? It would be advantageous to know in advance whether I am going to need 1 tape or 2.

I assume you are trying to create a job that includes multiple servers, have you ever done single-server backups of the other systems? If so you can look at the job logs from those backups and get a good idea.

The only other option I would give is to find a server with a lot of extra disk space and create a virtual tape volume on that harddrive and then perform your backup, the file that results will be roughly the same size as what is written to the tape.... I believe you have to be running ArcServe 2000 SP4 to get the option - then just run the Arcserve Device Configuration from the Arcserve program folder and create a FILE SYSTEM DEVICE.

HI,

There is a simpler way to do this....

Just run a "count" job with the same source selection as the backup ...
this will give you the size of data that would be backed up

You can find this under the utilities in the ARCserve manager.

cheers
speshalyst So it Shall be Written!
So it Shall be Done!!

Ahh, cool, I've never bothered with the Count option... Thanks.
