I am currently using Arcserve with a HP C7145-8000 Autoloader. The current backup is around 350GB, but Arcserve is cancelling the job because it is running out of tapes (40/80 DLT IV). The details tab under devices says that the compression is on, but when I view the activity logs for the job it list the compression ratio as zero. I also cannot access the compression element of arcserve as the icon is continuously greyed out. I have followed some technical data from CA, but this does not help. Does any know of any information regarding these problems, or should I remove Arcserve and install Backup Exec instead!!!!!

Many Thanks

When compression is set on the hardware ( an it mostly is ) then the backup device will completely take care of it. The backup software doesn't have any influence on this.
Enabling/disabling compression from the ARCserve device manager can only be set with blank media and is on a one tape basis ( next tape that is put in will have compression enabled again ).
What kind of data do you backup. Can it still be compressed or is it backed up from an already compressed state.
Also what are your backup speeds, DLT tape drives need to run in 'streaming mode' ( 5-10 MB/sec uncompressed / compressed ) otherwise the drives will write lots of empty data blocks to tape that will have your tape capacity decreased.
