What would be the most efficient way to archive old users off the Exchange server?

WOuld it be just manually dragging/dropping all messages from their Exchange profile to a local pst file? Or would it be easiler to create an account for them on a client pc and configure to forward messages to the offline pst? Or is there something else?

I think your first thought is best. Create PSTs for all of them and put them on a backup disc.

We simply hide old mailboxes and keep them around for as long as required. Generally the appropriate manager will scan through and forward on/save anything of relevance so that we can delete the mailbox, where possilble.

I move the e-mail address assigned to the mailbox over to their replacement or manager. PST files are ok, the only problem is that you have to find and mount them when the need arises, if the information is still on the exchange server you don't have this hassle.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

I do a mixture of both.

Leave the account hidden for as long as needed having set the manager up with access to the inbox to transfer any important emails.
Give the manager / replacement employ the OldEmployee@myco.com
After X months I will discuss with the manager that time is ok to delete mailbox.
And then either use archive all items older than 31/12/2099 or use exmerge to create the PST.
Burn it onto CD/dvd, put that in my fire proof safe and stick a copy of it on the managers' computer for them to access.

Hope that makes sense!

Yes, ExMerge is a more effecient way of making PST files than manually.
