archiver is stuk. CONNECT INTERNAL only, until freed.

Hi,

I got the following error:

ORA-00257 archiver is stuk. CONNECT INTERNAL only, until freed.

I looked at the free space and that isn't the problem.

This is what the trace file says:
ARC0: Beginning to archive log# 3 seq# 24271
ARC0: I/O error 19502 archiving log 3 to '/oradata6/prodenv/archive/arch_0000024271.arch'
ARC0: Archiving not possible: error count exceeded
ARC0: Failed to archive log# 3 seq# 24271
ARCH: Archival stopped, error occurred. Will continue retrying

I guess you haven't changed ARCHIVE_LOG_DEST.
Have you checked the filesystem - is it mounted,...?
Have you (or your sysadmin) checked OS-errorlog?

I get this message when the Oracle archive log directory is full. Move some older log files out to make some open space. The DB should resume by itself. Then compress or move out some more files.

If it helps,

When I get this error it's because my arch location is full. Once I free some space, the only way I've got it going again is to issue
Alter system archive log stop;

followed by

Alter system archivelog start;

Connect as internal and do the following

show parameter arch

The archive_log_dest is the directory where the archived logs are. This device is full, once you move files to another file system with enough space, the ARC process will restart and the db will work just fine.

apparently there were two archive processes running. I restarted the instance and everything was solved.
