I have lots of files in a large directory. Some files had been created three years ago.I want to archive these files and then remove them.

Could someone give me some advice?

Thanks in advance!

First option: Using NetWorker Archive (requires a archiving license)

The concept of archiving is basically: backing the data and then deleting the files from the file system.

Using NetWorker Archive just makes sure that the saveset is maintained in the media database indefinitely and the archive pool is never overwritten.

Second option: using Hierachial Storage management (HSM)

Files that have not been accessed over a certain period are offloaded onto a separate pool in the jukebox. In its place, instead of the data file, there are placeholders with links to the actual data file. When you try to access the file, HSM will retrieve the file from tape and put it back on the file system.

The advantage of this over Archiving is that the files are available for tape for retrieval. HSM automates this.
With archiving, you have to manually recover the data before the files can be accesed.

Refer to the Administrator guide on both subjects.
