The full backup can clear the archive bit (you have to set that option). Differentials check for files that have the archive bit set (files that have changed since the last time the archive bit was cleared) and does not clear the archive bit after the backup. Incrementals will also check for files that have the archive bit set but it clears the archive bit after the backup. Thus, if you run differentials, any files that are changed will continue to backup every time until you run a full/clear archive bit backup OR an incremental backup because the differential did not clear the archive bit. If you run incrementals, the changed files will backup then not backup again until they are changed again because the archive bit has been reset.
