I installed Debian 3.0 "Woody" (no problems), "apt-get update" then I used "apt-get install x-window-system" (no problem), then "apt-get install kde" (no problem) then "apt-get install synaptic" and again (no problem).

Now, but not always, I try to "apt-get install a-new-package," and it goes through the process of download and installing only to end with an error message something like "dpkg returned an error message 1" and the package doesn't install. Like I said, "not always," though. This error occurs wheather I use the command line "apt-get" or GUI "synaptic" apt-get. I have also had this same problem with Libranet and Knoppix (Debian Distos) but, again, not always.

AMD 1333 K7 Athlon
K7AMA motherboard
512 mb sdram
Yamaha CDR
SB16 sound board
ATI RageII 4mb
USB
40 gig Western Digital HD

Multi Boot (Grub) Win98, RH8.0, Libranet2.somthing, Knoppix3.2, and Debian3.0 with kernel-2.4.18-k7 initrd.img-2.4.18-K7 (dpkg error problem occured with old kernel-2.2.20 also).

How do I solve this error problem?

"apt-get -f install dpkg" didn't work.

Thanks, --Chris
