Apps close when I try to type!!! Can't figure this out!!!

I have a Dell Latitude D420. When I open anything from the control panel or administrative tools and type on the keyboard after it opens, it immediately closes the app with no errors. I've reinstalled the admin pack but still have this problem. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Can you reproduce this in Safe Mode, or in Normal Mode but as a different user?

Have you tried a different Keyboard, or the On-Screen Keyboard (Windows Key + U)?

Can System Restore get you back to before this problem?

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Anything mentioned in the Event Viewer?

Have you done the usual malware checks etc?
