I'm new to Lotus Approach. Recently someone brought to my attention that a user couldn't open a particular file that he had no problems whatsoever opening before. This is an Approach file which in my opinion it has gotten too big (492+ MB)and growing. The user says that when the file was 490 MB in size, the progress bar would reach 100% and after maybe 5-10 minutes the file would open; this is not the case any more. The progress bar reaches 100%, and the file just won't open. I know it isn't a PC performance, or memory issue since I tried to open the file from a PIII 866 Mhz with 256 MB or RAM. and I got the same outcome. Any other file in Approach can be opened normally but this one. Hope someone can enlight me with some knowledge...
Thanks

Lotus approach save the file in approach view mode and .dbf mode as well. An approach view file cannot be opened without corresponding .dbf file. However, .dbf file can be opened in practically any software i.e. 1-2-3, Excel or Access and Lotus Approach. I therefore request you to try locate corresponding .dbf file.

Try opening the .dbf file for this database directly with Approach's File - Open and, if it opens this way, use File - User setup- Approach Preferences to display a dialog box. On the "Database" tab click the Compress button then OK. This will reorganize the indexes which may have grown too big to handle.

Then try opening the application Approach file to see if it opens ok. If so, you will need to add "compression" to your routine maintenance processes. There is a program to do this called DBFPack in the XpertSS Products catalog on XpertSS.com.
