Applying paragraph style is not changing size or font

We are using InDesign CS2 for catalog production. We are copying our text from Excel files. The Senior Designer has no problem formatting the text with Paragraph Styles. The Junior Designer finds that the font changes correctly but not the pt. size. It seems to vary from Mac to Mac. We all have the same OS (tiger), CS2 etc...versions, We have tried the 3 ways to override a style with no success.

Any ideas what might be causing the discrepency?

Are you doing it the same way as the person who it works for?
Do you have your para styles and charactor style set to none before import text.
