I am trying to apply a gradient to some text; I followed the instructions on the tutorial but can't get it to work.
The background of my text gets filled instead of the actual text. What am I doing wrong?

The text in the tutorial that you mention has been converted to paths. It is no longer editable as text (ie, if there is a spelling mistake, it can't be corrected). If you want to acheive the same effect, select your text, go to 'Text > Convert to Paths', and then change your fill from 'basic' to 'gradient'.

Hope this helps!
