I have decided to let go of my OS/2 laptop and buy a new laptop and install Linux. I have used Linux for over ten years, so I sort of know what I'm doing. I haven't had a lot of success getting good DOS emulation or Windows emulation on Linux like I get with OS/2. Does anyone know of comparable replacements for the following?
Starfish Sidekick or Lotus Organizer - neither the KDE
Organizer/Calendar or Gnome Calendar will do. Ximian
doesn't seem to have the features either.
FoxPro - a relational database program that runs without
needing SQL server. It is a standalone product. I
don't know if MySQL or Postgresql is similiar.
Quicken - I like GNUcash, but it lacks a few features. Is
there something else I could try?

Thanks,
Iolair MacWalter

I don't know foxpro and few about mySql.

Postgres is easy to set up, don't needs much of memory, hdd and maintainance, if you run it in a standalone-fashion.

The common userinterface is a sql-console.
There are some GUI-Frontends like pgaccess, ...?
In fact, it is a database-server, but you don't need to run it in a server-fashion.

Thanks for the responses. WINE will not run Sidekick or Quicken. I haven't tried FoxPro on it though. If dosemu would run my old DOS stuff, I could use that, but so far, no luck with that.

You might alway want to take a look at VMware workstation which installs on Linux and actually loads alternate OSes as a task. You could load DOS, windows any, even multiple instances of OSes, all withing Linux.

While you're looking for a noteboot and wish to run Linux you might want to look at some units that can be delivered with Linux already installed and running. Might save you some time AND not force you to have to pay for M$ stuff.

GOod luck.

thedaver : WINE Is Not an Emulator (that's the name of it!).

It translates API calls from Windows-speak to Linux-speak for the OS :)
