I really cannot connect with my friend using windows xp and application sharing... i know i used to have a problem when i installed xp, i couldn't even receive pictures use camera or anything.. the connection was blocked. When i upgrade to MSN 6 from windows messenger 4.7 that i had before, i was able to use the camera, use application sharing and everything.. but not with everybody.. actually for one of my friend i cannot connect to her computer and she's able to connect with others and i'm able to connect with others as well.. she never had any problems.. she could connect with windows messenger, msn messenger and any software.. i could connect only with msn 6.0 but unfortuantelly since she upgraded to SP1, the connection doesn't work between us any more, I looked up about this error, and it looks that for some reason her computer cannot guess my ip (Remote address cannot be found) but sending files and pictures between us works perfect both ways. Also i forget to mention that before she updates to SP1, i was able to connect to her ONLY IF SHE was the one who send me the Invitation for application sharing, if i try to send to anybody.. i will get time out error. Now it doesn't work both ways. We are both using direct internet connections, no firewalls no NAT etc... something is messing with my application sharing and i cannot figure it out :( plz gimme any hints

Try these two steps:

1. Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components, Networking Services, check the boxes Internet Gateway Device and Discovery, and uPnP Service. Apply the changes.

2. Update from Microsoft to DirectX 9.0b, as this aids in NAT traversal issues.

reboot.

Well we both didn't have the Upnp installed, and she didn't had the dx8.0, we did all the above and it didn't work.. we still get the same error.. actually i'm able to connect with other ppl, and she's not, she has a laptop and as soon as she put the SP1, she has such problems,
any other hints ?

She needs SP1.

The only other issue is firewalls. The specific error message you are getting says that the IP and port usage you are trying to use is inappropriate for your local context. Essentially this means that when the connection is attempted it is not possible. Usually this means a firewall on her side is blocking the ports.

Make sure she does not have the default XP firewall installed. She should right-click her Network Connection, properties, Advanced tab and be certain the firwall is not enabled.

As you both need firewalls, you should open the ports needed by Messenger in order to make the connection:

[tt]
Real Time Transport Protocol (Audio & Video) UDP 5004 - 65535
Application Sharing & White Board TCP 1503
File Transfer TCP 6891 - 6900
Remote Assistance TCP 3389

[/tt]

It worked somehow.. i don't know how.. but i told her to uninstall messenger 6.0 and install the 5.0 which i guess is more stable.. then the 5.0 updated some files.. now she's back with the 6.0 and everything is working magically

The magic is called NAT traversal and SSDP Discovery service.
