Application for post code distance mapping

Not sure if this is the right forum but does anyone know what applications are available that can work out distances between post codes in the uk?

I've had a brief look at the royal mail website but couldnt see anything obvious.

I've seen many websites that allow you to search for something (a pub for instance!) and it returns results based on distance from your post code, that is what i've been tasked to look into.

One I know of is PostCode Anywhere not cheap though

We get quarterly updates from the royal mail:

http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/jump2?catId=400084&mediaId=400088

It's expensive though but it provides you with x and y co-ordinates and you can apply a formula to this data to work out the distance.

Found a couple more, but they seem to be resellers of the RM PAF database anyway!

Yeah, you'll find that's the case in a lot of products.

It's actually Ordnance Survey who provide the co-ordinates to Royal Mail who then match up postcodes to them. These details can then be sold on by the Royal Mail to any other companies that want to offer products and/or data.

We found that it was easier to just get the details from Royal Mail.
