applescript changing systems preferences

Just beginning to learn applescript. Is there a way to change system preferences using it?

My problem is this:

I am using the open source driver for a wireless card. Everything works fine, except that when I reboot the mac it forgets the encryption key used on the wireless network. I would like to create a script which automatically enters the encryption key.
