I recently had to do a restore on my system. I have a compaq presario model 7471 running windows98 se using avg anti-virus and zone alarm pro. When I tried to re-install my Apollo inkjet printer model P-2500, the install would copy all necessary files and then I'd get a pop-up panel informing me that the install had failed. Any ideas on what's causing this and how I can resolve this issue ?

A) Control Alt Delete will show a list of running processes.
You could try ending all of the items shown except explorer and systray, and then try the install.

B) You could try creating an install folder on your harddrive, copying the install files from cd to it, booting in safe mode and then running the install from the harddrive. (if you've not done that before, pressing the F8 key several times while the system is booting up will get you to a menu where you can choose the startup option.)

Prior to doing either of those you ought to check add/remove programs for any apollo related items and remove them if any are found, also check on printers screen and be sure that an apollo printer is not showing up there -remove it if it is. Sometimes antivirus programs will mess up software installs. These are a couple of ways to try the install without antivirus stuff running in the background.

Then be sure to reboot the system so you have your antivirus and firewall running again.

Good luck.
