APC Smart-UPS 700 - fault tracing & cell testing

I think one or both of the cells has failed through old age! They are BB Battery BP7-12 (12v 7AH/20hr) standard UPS calles I guess...The question?... how can I check these batteries for correct function.. the UPS squeaks alarmingly when I try to power it on and a red light shows on the front rather than what I was used to.....!

UPS has lasted 3 years since being acquired vias Ebay for 50 UKP
