APC Backup UPS Pro 1000

I'm trying to use a APC 8 port Share UPS expander with an APC Backup UPS Pro 1000. I plu git into the serial communication port but I don't get any power lights on the share UPS. Does anyone have any ideas on what I might need to get this setup working?

The BP1000 cannot support the Share-UPS, if you wish to use a Share-UPS you will need a Smart-UPS 700 or higher.
